WOOD BROOCHES

The history of pins has started already in ancient times. Brooches, because we are talking about them now, were well known in Egypt, Greece and Rome. Over time, Scandinavian people and the Germanic peoples got acquainted with them too. Brooches were smelted in special forms, mostly in a shape of gods’ faces and flowers. Initially, they were made from bronze, later from copper, silver and gold. In ancient and medieval times these ornaments served as a decoration and foremost, as a practical clasp for robes. Women, in the second part of the 19th century, used brooches to clasp dress or shirt under their necks. Today brooches are used in a classic way – they are clasped right by the breast. A typical male version of pin has a shorter history. In the 18th century man started to decorate their clothes with flowers. Over time male outfit became more modest, however, bouquets or products made in the fashion of bouquets remained. In the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century flower in buttonhole became an obligatory attribute of an elegant man. The custom to clasp a flower to a lapel was popularized during the Victorian era and maintained its status until these days.
